Zero Infrastructure Architecture

Modlin™ Chat starts with direct communication, then adapts to the network around you.

Peer-to-Peer Communication

Connect directly with people whenever possible, without putting a messaging server in the middle.

End-to-End Encrypted

Keep your messages private with encryption between you and the person you're talking to.

Multi-Transport Layer

Connect through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, or the Internet using the connection available to you.

IP as your Identifier

Your IP serves as your identifier, letting you start chatting with people directly without an account.

vID
Integration with vID

Connect Modlin™ Chat with vID and use your vID services alongside your conversations.

Cross-Platform

Use it anywhere on web, mobile, desktop, CLI, SSH, and supported connected devices.

Local/Cloud Store

Store your chats and media locally or link Modlin™ Drive using vLink to store it in your cloud.

Carrier Messaging

Stay connected through RCS, SMS, or MMS when direct messaging is not available.

Terminal Access

Start or continue conversations from the terminal using the Modlin™ Chat CLI or SSH.

Who you are doesn't have to be where you are.

Modlin Chat showing a private conversation

Chat directly from your terminal

No new window. No heavy interface. SSH into Modlin™ Chat or use the native CLI and keep talking from the place where you already work.

$ bun add @modlin/chat
Modlin Chat terminal interface

One chat. Many ways to connect.

The same conversation can move between local networking, Internet transports, and carrier messaging when the network needs a different path.

DIRECT

Peer-to-peer first

LAN, UDP, TCP, WebRTC, and other direct paths can be used when they are available.

FALLBACK

Stay connected

When direct communication is not possible, Modlin™ Chat can use an available carrier path such as RCS, SMS, or MMS.

A simple chat interface. Nothing more.

Messages, connection status, and the people you talk to—without turning a private conversation into a social network.

Built around the conversation

The product stays quiet so the conversation can be the focus.

Questions? We've got answers.

From peer-to-peer messaging and end-to-end encryption to vID and carrier fallback, here's how Modlin™ Chat works.

What is Modlin Chat?

Modlin™ Chat is a peer-to-peer chat platform made for private communication. It lets you chat directly with another person when possible. You can use it with an IP address and port, or sign in with vID to use a username.

How does peer-to-peer chat work?

Peer-to-peer means your device can connect directly to another device without a chat server in the middle. Modlin™ Chat can use local networks, the Internet, UDP, TCP, or WebRTC, depending on the connection available.

Is Modlin Chat end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. Modlin™ Chat uses end-to-end encryption based on Signal's security standards. This protects your message content between you and the person you are talking to.

Do I need an account to use Modlin Chat?

No. You can use Modlin™ Chat without an account by using a reachable address. You can also sign in with vID if you want to use a permanent username.

What is vID?

vID is Modlin's unified identity service. With vID, you can use a username instead of using your IP address as your main way to identify yourself. vID can also manage your phone number and other information connected to your account.

What if a direct connection is not possible?

Some networks block direct connections because of NAT, firewalls, or carrier restrictions. When this happens, Modlin™ Chat can use another available connection method instead of stopping the message.

Can Modlin Chat use RCS, SMS, or MMS?

Yes. Modlin™ Chat can use RCS, SMS, or MMS when direct peer-to-peer communication is not possible or when you want to use normal phone messaging. Modlin Chat keeps its own identity and encryption layer when using these transports.

What devices can use Modlin Chat?

Modlin™ Chat is designed for web, mobile, desktop, CLI, and SSH. You can use the same chat protocol on different devices and choose the interface that works best for you.

Start chatting with Modlin™ Chat. No account required. Choose your client, connect, and let the conversation begin.
